This nineteenth-century Gothic Revival altar crucifix is cast in brass with a polished gold finish and a visible repair to the reverse. The piece incorporates a central figure of Christ, fleur-de-lis finials on the cross ends, an engraved INRI plaque, and a skull and crossbones memento mori motif above a multi-tiered hexagonal faceted pedestal base. Engraved floral decoration adorns both the vertical shaft and the horizontal arms of the cross, while the heavy base features stepped mouldings and faceted sides. The crucifix measures 38 cm high and 15 cm wide in total. It stands upright on any flat surface, making it suitable for display on a mantelpiece or a desktop within a home setting.

A 19th-century altar crucifix is a freestanding cross displaying the figure of Christ, designed for placement upon an altar or devotional surface during religious ceremonies.

These items were predominantly cast in solid brass or bronze, frequently assembled with threaded central rods and decorated with hand-engraved or chased surface detailing.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina, and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect against oxidisation.

Place the item on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a curated bookcase alongside leather-bound volumes and minimalist ceramics to highlight its sculpted silhouette.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-finished casting seams, internal threaded iron or brass rod construction, natural surface patination in recessed areas, and period-correct iconography like memento mori symbols.
