Refectory tables originated in medieval monasteries, where they were used in the dining hall (refectory) for communal meals by monks and clergy.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid native hardwoods like English oak, joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints, and supported by heavy stretcher bases for stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, pegged joinery, timber shrinkage, natural patination, and tool marks consistent with period hand-working methods rather than modern machine production.

Pairing the heavy wooden table with contemporary minimalist seating or placing it within a pared-back neutral space allows the historical character and craftsmanship to stand out as a central focal point.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the wood, avoiding silicone polishes and exposure to direct heat or moisture.
