Flintlock pistols were the dominant firearm mechanism from the early 17th century well into the 19th century, utilising a flint striking against a steel frizzen to create a spark that ignited the gunpowder charge.

These firearms were typically constructed using forged iron or steel for the lock mechanism and barrel, brass for mountings and frames, and dense hardwoods such as walnut for the stocks.

Authenticity is determined by examining proof marks, the hand-forged nature of the internal mechanism components, appropriate patination on the metal and wood, and period-correct construction methods.

They are frequently mounted on velvet backing within shadow boxes or displayed securely on library shelving and mantelpieces to highlight their historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires storing items in a stable environment with controlled humidity to prevent rust and wood degradation, applying microcrystalline wax to metal surfaces, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
