Glass display domes, also known as cloches, became popular during the Victorian period in nineteenth-century Britain. They were designed to protect delicate household objects, carriage clocks, taxidermy, and artificial floral arrangements from dust, moisture, and soot.

Traditional glass domes were made from hand-blown, thin-walled soda-lime glass, featuring a characteristic rounded top. They were fitted onto turned wooden bases, often crafted from mahogany, walnut, or ebonised timber, featuring a recessed groove and fabric lining.

Authentic period domes usually exhibit hand-blown glass characteristics, including minor air bubbles, subtle flow lines, and uneven thickness. The timber bases often show natural wear, dark patination, and hand-turned mouldings on the underside.

A glass dome can be placed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or shelving unit to highlight small curios, antique timepieces, or botanical specimens. It acts as an artistic focal point while adding texture and height to decorative arrangements.
