A Weighted 'British Chess Company' Four Inch ‘Popular Staunton' Chess Set, circa 1900

one side 'ebonised', the other side left natural, the chessmen with green baizes to the undersides, kings topped with cylindrical finials, queens with crowns, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horses’ heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with ball finials, in a rectangular mahogany box, with a hinged lid, the interior lined with green baize.

This late Victorian chess set and storage box dates from 1900. The rectangular storage box is made of warm brown mahogany with a hinged lid, secured by a brass latch, and features visible wear and small chips along the front wooden edge. Inside, the box is lined with bright green felt. The set includes weighted Staunton pattern chessmen divided into two sides: one side uses natural boxwood with carved horse head knights and cylindrical king finials, while the other side uses ebonised pieces in contrasting dark tones. Kings stand 10.2 cm high, pawns measure 5.5 cm, and the storage box measures 15 cm high, 30.5 cm wide and 15.1 cm deep.
