Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A refectory table is an elongated wooden table originally designed for communal dining in monastic dining halls during the Middle Ages. Over time, the style was adopted into domestic residences and country houses, characterised by heavy timber construction, sturdy legs, and low connecting stretchers.

Refectory tables are typically crafted from solid hard woods such as oak, walnut, or pine. Construction techniques often feature mortise and tenon joinery, pegged timber joints, hand-carved friezes, and brass or iron hardware on pieces incorporating storage drawers.

Authentic period examples display signs of historical wear, uneven timber shrinkage, and hand-planed surfaces rather than modern machine cuts. Look for genuine wooden pegs holding the joints, historical oxidisation on metal hardware, and natural surface patination around high-contact areas like the tabletop and stretchers.

A tall refectory table can function as a spacious kitchen server, a central hall console, or a long dining table paired with contemporary or mismatched period seating. Its clean geometric lines allow it to anchor open-plan living areas or act as a functional sideboard against a neutral backdrop.

Maintain solid oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber moisture. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and constant direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, cracking, or surface bleaching.
