FAQs

Staffordshire spaniel figures originated in the Staffordshire pottery district of England during the 18th and 19th centuries, famously depicting Queen Victorias own spaniel, Dash, and becoming a staple of Victorian fireplace mantels.

These ornaments were typically slip-cast or hand-moulded from earthenware pottery, then hand-painted with ceramic pigments and glazed, often featuring metallic lustre highlights on collars and chains.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit characteristics such as crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside, hand-painted facial features with minor irregularities, and a lighter earthenware body beneath any chips.

They can be styled traditionally on a fireplace mantel facing inward, or placed on bookshelves and sideboards to introduce a touch of historic charm and asymmetry to contemporary spaces.

Clean antique ceramic figures gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or abrasive materials to protect the delicate glaze and painted details.
