The structure includes two rounded drop leaves, a single end drawer equipped with brass drop handles, and square tapered legs finished with brass castors. Minor signs of wear appear across the wood surfaces, consistent with age and routine use. The table measures 69 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 84 cm deep. Position this piece at the end of a sofa within an English Country House setting to provide functional surface space for lamps or books in a living room or study. The compact footprint fits neatly beside seating while the drop leaves offer flexible surface area when expanded.

FAQs

A Pembroke table is a type of flexible drop-leaf table first developed in the mid-to-late 18th century, named according to tradition after the Countess of Pembroke. It was designed for occasional dining, tea, or writing, featuring two hinged side flaps and one or two end drawers.

Georgian cabinetmakers constructed Pembroke tables predominantly using timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood. Construction details typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, crossbanded veneer borders, fine boxwood stringing, and cast brass handles or castors.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn wood on under surfaces, secondary timber like oak or pine for drawer linings, and hand-cut dovetail joints. Original brass hardware will show minor structural variations from hand-casting, and the underside of the drop-leaf hinges should exhibit period-appropriate screws with off-centre slots.

A Pembroke table functions well as an accent or side table positioned alongside a sofa or within a reading nook. The drop leaves allow for flexible proportions, expanding when hosting or providing compact surface area for table lamps and books when folded.

Keep satinwood furniture away from direct sunlight, damp environment, and strong heat sources to avoid wood shrinkage or veneer lifting. Clean surfaces using a dry soft cloth, applying a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the direction of the wood grain once or twice a year.
