A manju netsuke is a short, thick, circular toggle, typically shaped like a manju cake, often featuring intricately carved or pierced designs rather than the figurative three-dimensional sculpture of kagamibuta or animal netsuke.

While wood such as boxwood was frequently utilised for its fine grain and durability, authentic period pieces were also crafted from ivory, horn, ceramic, and various metals.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit natural wear patinas, distinct himotoshi cord channels for securing the toggle, and precise hand-carved detailing consistent with historical craftsmanship before mass reproduction.

These small objects are best displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet, on a dedicated shelf, or atop a specialised stand where their fine surface details can be appreciated at close range.

Boxwood should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting, and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth without the application of modern chemical polishes.
