Imari porcelain is a traditional type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, characterized by its distinctive palette of underglaze blue, iron red, and gilt highlights over a white background.

Items should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, and dishwashers to protect the hand-painted glazes.

These pieces can be displayed on walls using plate hangers, arranged centrally on dining tables, or styled within open shelving units to introduce contrasting colour and historical texture.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit subtle irregularities from hand-forming, crackle or wear consistent with age, hand-painted motifs with depth of colour, and often spurious or genuine maker marks on the base.

Traditional pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, painted by hand using mineral-based pigments for the cobalt blue and iron red details, and often finished with clear glazes.
