Sold by: Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large Meiji Period (1868-1912) ceramic charger made under the banner of the Fukagawa Seiji Gaisha, a breakaway company founded in 1894 by one of the sons of the Fukagawa family, this family were also the founders of the Koransha company of the mid Meiji Period. This highly decorative wall plaque is decorated within three cartouches around a central roundel consisting of a phoenix in flight above paulownia, the first scene depicts Manchurian cranes in flight above a rough sea, the second a more tranquil scene of native iris and finally a charming scene of carp swimming beneath a maple tree, the panels interspersed with formal roundels in typical Imari palette , the rear of the charger decorated with a continuous scrolling band and bearing the company signature seal.
