Antique Japanese Meiji Imari Porcelain Plates with Exotic Birds – Pair

Description

An antique Japanese Meiji pair of Imari porcelain plates, finely hand painted with exotic birds, flowering peonies and colourful garden scenes.

This superb quality pair is decorated in a vibrant palette of underglaze blue, iron red, turquoise, green, yellow and soft purple enamels. Each plate centres upon an elegant exotic bird perched among flowering branches, peonies and stylised foliage.

The shaped borders are arranged with alternating geometric and foliate panels including red latticework, floral motifs and stylised wave decoration. The gently scalloped rims enhance their decorative appearance.

The reverse of each plate is finished with underglaze blue floral sprays and painted character marks. These striking antique plates would make wonderful cabinet pieces or an impressive wall display.

In good antique condition, no repairs, chips, cracks or damage.
