This four-piece Japanese Meiji period Imari set comprises three display plates and a matching small bowl. Crafted from porcelain with polychrome enamel and gold gilding, the pieces display a vibrant palette of cobalt blue, red, green, and gold, enhanced by geometric border patterning and underglaze cobalt blue. The decoration depicts a nineteenth century sailing ship surrounded by Dutch or Portuguese figures, characteristic of the Black Ship motif. Two plates have small chips, and the bowl features a historical repair utilising four brass crampons. Practical for display in an English Country House setting, the set measures 19 cm in diameter for each plate, while the bowl measures 11.5 cm in diameter and 6.5 cm in height. The plates sit well on a sideboard top, and the bowl functions as a decorative tabletop container. The set suits daily viewing or curation within a dedicated collection of nineteenth century Asian ceramics.

Black Ship Imari, also known as Nanban or Kurofune Imari, refers to Japanese export porcelain featuring depictions of Portuguese or Dutch trading vessels, known historically as black ships. These pieces emerged as Japan opened trade with Western nations, combining traditional Japanese ceramic decoration with European maritime iconography.

Imari porcelain was crafted using kaolin clay and fired at high temperatures. The production process involved applying cobalt blue decoration under the glaze, followed by a glaze firing, after which overglaze enamels in iron red, green, and gilt paint were hand-applied and fired in a secondary kiln.

Authentic nineteenth-century Imari porcelain generally displays hand-painted irregularities, subtle spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and a distinctivepalette combining cobalt blue underglaze with rich iron-red and gilded overglaze detail. The porcelain paste often shows slight weight and density compared to modern reproductions.

Imari porcelain pieces can be displayed on brass or clear acrylic plate stands on a sideboard, styled inside modern glass display cabinets, or arranged as wall art to add historical texture and rich colour to contemporary neutral spaces.

Clean antique Imari porcelain using tepid water and a mild non-abrasive liquid soap applied with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, scouring pads, dishwashers, and soaking, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamel and gilded decoration.
