FAQs

Giltwood console tables rose to prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in Europe, frequently utilised in grand reception rooms and hallways as decorative architectural furniture.

These tables were typically constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or oak, which were then coated in gesso, meticulously hand-carved, and finished with gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces display genuine hand-carving irregularities, traditional gesso application showing micro-crazing, and natural wear to the gold leaf that reveals the red bole or wood substrate beneath.

Pairing an ornate giltwood console with minimalist modern surroundings or clean architectural lines creates a striking focal point, balancing historical texture with current design sensibilities.

Antique giltwood should be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth, strictly avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners which can damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
