Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Sutherland table is a specialised style of drop-leaf table introduced during the mid-nineteenth century. Named after Harriet Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland, it is characterized by a narrow central top section and deep falling leaves supported by gate-leg mechanisms.

Cabinetmakers during the Victorian era predominantly constructed these tables using dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. Decorative examples often features burr walnut veneers, floral marquetry inlays, turned leg supports, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut joinery, original ceramic or brass castors on the feet, and narrow proportions when folded. Examining the underside reveals period-correct construction techniques, aged wood patina, and secondary woods like pine or oak used for inner framing.

Due to its narrow depth when collapsed, a Sutherland table functions exceptionally well as a side table beside a sofa or placed within a hallway corridor. When fully opened, it provides an adaptable surface for tea service or displaying books and table lamps.

Maintain walnut furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp environments to prevent wood movement and veneer lifting.
