Features a scene and is inscribed 'babelsberg the residence of frederic willian'

Babelsberg palace is the largest district of the bradenburg capital potsdam in germany, which was finished being built in 1849.

The scene of the palace is painted and rubbed away to reveal the mother of pearl laid underneath, surrounded by florals and the same mother of pearl technique.

Tilt topped.

Further hand painting and mother of pearl work to the scalloped edged base.

Minor losses and rubbing to gilt work.

Popular during the mid-19th century, Victorian papier-mache tilt-top tables were decorative occasional tables made from compressed paper pulp that was lacquered, gilded, and hand-painted. The tilt-top mechanism allowed the table surface to be turned vertically when not in use, displaying the painted artwork as a decorative panel.

These pieces were crafted using layered sheets or moulded pulp of paper treated with adhesives, dried, and coated with black asphaltum varnish or japan lacquer. Decorative elements were applied using ground gilding, oil paint, and carefully inlaid pieces of mother-of-pearl shell before being polished.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural fine craquelure within the thick black lacquer, hand-applied gilding showing light surface wear, and genuine mother-of-pearl inlays flush with the surface. Some pieces feature maker stamps from prominent 19th-century manufacturers such as Jennens & Bettridge on the underside.

Position the table with its top tilted upwards in an empty corner or alcove to showcase the central painted panel as artwork. Alternatively, set it flat beside an armchair as an occasional tea or wine table to add historical texture to a contemporary room.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the lacquer from cracking or yellowing. Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial aerosol polishes that can degrade the delicate oil paint and gilding.
