This Victorian side table dates from the nineteenth century and belongs to the English Country House style. Constructed from flame mahogany with bone hardware, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish and visible matched veneers. The upper section comprises a shaped rim top surface and a single drawer for storage fitted with a small round knob, showing a minor surface mark on the top. Below the apron, a turned pedestal column supports the structure and links to four detailed carved scroll feet resting on the floor. Standing 74 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 37.5 cm deep, the furniture item is ideal for use as an end-of-a-sofa table, a lamp table, or a useful table in the hallway.

Victorian flame mahogany side tables are characterized by their use of highly figured mahogany veneers cut from the fork of the tree, displaying a distinct flame-like grain pattern. Typically constructed during the 19th century, these tables often feature turned central pedestals, carved scroll legs, and compact, functional proportions.

These tables primarily feature solid mahogany frames paired with cut flame mahogany veneers applied over stable timber substrates. Decorative elements often include turned support columns, hand-carved cabriole or scroll legs, and brass or bone escutcheon plates.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on internal drawers, hand-turned support columns, and natural timber shrinkage along the grain over time. Original surface finishes generally exhibit subtle patination and oxidation appropriate for their age.

Position the table beside a modern sofa or armchair to act as a functional accent surface. Pairing dark polished timber with neutral contemporary textiles or clean modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent the veneer from lifting or cracking.
