A late C19th Memento Mori in the form of a parian tile depicting an angel taking a sleeping child to heaven. These were particuarly common during the Victorian period, but persisted right up to WWI when infant mortality was high. Despite today's more masculine associations, blue was the colour of girls in the Victorian period.

Parian ware is a type of biscuite porcelain resembling marble, developed in Britain during the mid-nineteenth century by manufacturers such as Minton and Copeland for sculptural figures and decorative items.

These pieces are cast from finely ground felspathic porcelain slip poured into moulds, then fired at high temperatures to achieve a matte, unglazed finish with high detail.

Authentic items typically display crisp, deep relief moulding, a smooth marble-like texture without glaze, and occasionally impressed maker marks or registration diamonds on the reverse.

Mounting such pieces against dark or neutral walls creates a striking visual contrast, highlighting the sculptural depth and classical texture within modern living spaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths, as unglazed parian can absorb moisture and discolour over time.
