This 19th-century Victorian games table is constructed from papier-mâché, wood, and mother-of-pearl, featuring an ebonised black finish and an oak-lined drawer to one side. The square top has a bright green baize surface surrounded by intricate mother-of-pearl floral inlay along the border and frieze. The turned baluster pedestal stem and splayed quadruped base are heavily decorated with similar floral patterns and detailed scrollwork feet. Losses to the mother-of-pearl inlay are visible in places. The table stands 74 cm high, 61.5 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, making it a suitable size for card games or general display in an empty corner of a living room or reception space.

Papier-mache furniture gained popularity during the 19th century in Britain, particularly throughout the Victorian era, when manufacturers perfected techniques to create durable decorative pieces embellished with lacquer, gilding, and mother-of-pearl inlay.

These items were constructed using layers of paper pulp or pressed paper sheets bound with adhesive, baked until hardened, and coated with black japan varnish or lacquer before being decorated with mother-of-pearl and gilding.

Authentic Victorian pieces display detailed hand-painted floral motifs, natural mother-of-pearl inlay flush with the surface, fine age-related checking in the lacquered finish, and solid timber framing beneath the paper layers.

An ebonised games table serves as an occasional table in a living room, positioned in a reading alcove or window space, where its dark finish and iridescent inlay complement contemporary furnishings.

Keep the surface away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat sources; dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using water or chemical polishes that could damage the delicate lacquer.
