Originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, cabaret and serving tray tables were crafted to hold tea sets, sweetmeats, or hors doeuvres. They feature an upper tray surfaceoften detachable or fitted with specialized glass dish compartmentsmounted on a compact tripod or four-legged base.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood. Accent elements included cast brass or ormolu mounts, turned bone or ivory handles, and hand-cut lead crystal inserts for serving foods.

Authentic period examples display signs of period construction, such as hand-sawn joinery, natural patination to brass hardware, and hand-cut glass dish inserts with minor irregularities. Look for appropriate wear on the underside of the feet and beneath the tray rim where handling naturally occurred.

Place the table beside an armchair or sofa to serve as an occasional drinks table or decorative accent. The glass compartments can remain intact as functional serving vessels during gatherings or hold small botanical elements and trinkets.

Remove the glass inserts to wash separately using warm water and mild soap, drying immediately to prevent water spots. Clean timber surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly, avoiding harsh chemical sprays on brass mounts or organic handle materials.
