FAQs

A Sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf table developed in the Victorian era, designed to fold down into a compact size when not in use.

They are traditionally constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often featuring decorative veneer work like figured walnut and marquetry inlays.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit traditional joinery, period-appropriate hardware such as ceramic castors, and hand-cut veneers or marquetry rather than modern machine-pressed prints.

Positioned against a wall or behind a sofa in its folded state, it serves as a functional surface for lamps or display items, and opens easily to accommodate guests.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying out, and dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth without using silicone-based polishes.
