FAQs

The Pembroke table originated in the 18th century, traditionally believed to be named after Henry Herbert, the 9th Earl of Pembroke, who commissioned a similar design for domestic use.

These tables are typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany or satinwood, featuring a central rectangular top with two hinged drop leaves supported by folding brackets, often accompanied by a single drawer.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate brass hardware, and hand-turned or tapering legs often fitted with castors.

Positioned against a wall with one leaf down or fully expanded as a compact centre table, it serves as a functional surface for lamps, books, or floral arrangements while adding historical warmth to modern spaces.

Maintain the finish by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity fluctuations, periodically applying a quality beeswax to nourish the timber and protect the polished surface.
