Neoclassical furniture draws inspiration from the classical art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, emerging in the mid-18th century as a reaction against the excess of Rococo, prioritising symmetry, straight lines, and classical motifs such as swags and fluting.

These pieces typically utilised a carved wooden or plaster base coated in layers of gessoa mixture of binder and chalkwhich was then meticulously hand-gilded with thin sheets of metal leaf, such as gold leaf, and burnished to achieve a metallic sheen.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth and crackle of the gesso layer, signs of hand-tooling under magnification, natural ageing and oxidisation of the metal leaf, and the traditional construction methods of the underlying timber frame.

Such pieces act as striking focal points in modern settings when juxtaposed with minimalist decor, neutral backdrops, and contemporary abstract art, allowing the historic craftsmanship to stand out without visual clutter.

Gilt and gesso surfaces are extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture, direct sunlight, and abrasions; they should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners, polishes, and chemical solvents.
