We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Pedestals and plinths have been utilised since classical antiquity, originally serving as architectural supports for statues, busts, and urns in Greek and Roman buildings. By the 18th and 19th centuries, scaled-down versions became popular in domestic interiors for displaying fine art, porcelain, and flora.

Traditional pedestals are typically constructed from dense domestic or exotic timbers such as pine, oak, or mahogany. Construction often involves multi-sided or columnar joinery, internal framing for structural stability, and hand-carved decorative mouldings or relief panels.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, and oxidisation patterns consistent with age. Genuine period pieces often exhibit hand-cut joinery, historic shrinkage cracks, and traditional finishes like wax or shellac rather than modern polyurethane coatings.

Pedestals can be incorporated into modern spaces by using them to elevate sculptural objects, ceramic vessels, or large floral arrangements, adding verticality and architectural interest to empty corners or hallways.

Preservation requires dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood. Exposure to direct sunlight and high humidity fluctuations should be avoided to prevent timber warping and cracking.
