FAQs

A Regency wine cooler, often referred to as a cellarette, is a piece of dining room furniture dating from the early 19th century. It was designed to chill wine bottles in ice during formal dining occasions.

These items are typically constructed from solid mahogany or feature rich mahogany veneers over secondary woods like pine or oak. They often incorporate lead linings, brass fittings, and hand-carved decorative elements such as scroll feet or lion paw feet.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-accurate joinery, hand-cut dovetails, aged patina on the wood, and original hardware or lead linings. Examination of the secondary woods and interior construction helps verify the period of manufacture.

Such pieces function effectively as distinctive accent furniture, serving as side tables, discrete storage containers, or traditional focal points within dining rooms and studies.

Maintenance involves keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading. Periodic application of quality beeswax helps nourish the timber and preserve the historic finish.
