Description

This fine and attractive cast iron stretcher table would most probably have been used in a conservatory, orangery, or garden in the middle of the 19th Century. What's particularly nice about this example, is that it retains its original cast iron top - and if you look underneath (see image) you can see the outline of the original diamond registration mark and the maker's name, which, most probably would have read C B Dale. Due to weathering, the lettering is now illegible but it is a lovely indication of its originality. The table is in good condition with no cracks or breaks to the cast iron and its structure is rigid - however, one of the eight original cast iron bolts that secure the top to the base is missing. We will consult with our specialist about replacing it, although experience tells me he may suggest it's best left alone, as it has been for many years.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

These tables originated during the Victorian era when domestic glasshouses and conservatories became popular. They were specifically designed to withstand humid environments while displaying exotic potted plants and ferns.

Authentic period pieces were produced using sand-casting techniques in industrial foundries like Coalbrookdale. Molten pig iron was poured into bespoke moulds to create intricate, load-bearing decorative structures.

Authenticity is assessed through surface oxidisation patterns, weight distribution, seam lines from historical moulding processes, and occasional registry or foundry marks stamped into the underside.

Such industrial and botanical elements provide textural contrast when placed against soft textiles or paired with minimalist planters, creating a focal point in sunrooms, hallways, or outdoor terraces.

Maintenance involves gentle dusting, removing active rust spots with wire wool or specialist inhibitors, and applying appropriate protective coatings such as microcrystalline wax or exterior-grade metal paints.
