This Italian side table dates from 1870 and follows the Sorrento style, executed in walnut, olivewood, and fruitwood with a warm brown colour. The octagonal top displays segmented veneers surrounding a circular central inlaid panel with concentric circles, geometric diamond, and triangular details, above a frieze with chequered inlay. The piece stands on a turned and ring-turned central stem incorporating inlay on the bulbous sections, supported by three hipped cabriole legs featuring herringbone inlay on the tops and primitive scroll feet. Practical dimensions are 72 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. Positioned in a contemporary home, this occasional table suits placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair in a drawing room or study. It provides a compact surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects while adding decorative interest through its detailed wood marquetry and distinctive turned architecture. The stable tripod base ensures it fits comfortably in smaller spaces or corners without overwhelming the surrounding interior.

Sorrento inlaid furniture originated in the 19th century in the Sorrento peninsula of Italy. It is recognised for intricate marquetry and wood micro-mosaics creating detailed geometric borders, pictorial central scenes, and decorative patterns.

Craftsmen typically utilised locally sourced Mediterranean woods, including olivewood, walnut, chestnut, and fruitwoods. Contrasting light and dark veneers were dyed or naturally selected to form detailed pictorial designs.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut wood veneers, micro-mosaic bandings, and turned central pedestals with hand-carved legs. Look for natural oxidation on the underside of the timber, original joinery methods, and minor shrinkage lines along veneer seams.

An inlaid tripod table functions as an accent piece alongside upholstered seating or positioned in a reading corner. Its compact dimensions make it suitable for holding books, table lamps, or small decorative glassware without overwhelming a contemporary layout.

Maintain wood marquetry by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer warping and color fading.
