Martaban jars are large stoneware vessels produced in China and Southeast Asia, historically used for maritime trade and storage of commodities such as water, oil, rice, and spices.

These vessels were typically thrown from coarse-grained stoneware clay, finished with heavy iron-rich dark brown or amber glazes, and fired in large wood-burning dragon kilns.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as kiln grit adhesion, glaze pooling, surface crackle, and natural wear consistent with centuries of burial or maritime transport.

Such a sculptural vessel works well as a standalone floor piece, atop a heavy timber console, or integrated into a minimalist vignette to provide textural contrast.

Preserve these items by dusting with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh cleaning agents, and keeping them away from direct sunlight and areas subject to rapid humidity changes.
