Swivel top card tables became prominent during the 18th and 19th centuries as parlour games and card playing gained popularity among the gentry, requiring specialized furniture that could convert from a console to a stable gaming surface.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joints, hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, and specialized pivoting or folding mechanisms supported by turned legs.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved details, timber shrinkage consistent with age, authentic wear on the baize lining, and traditional hand-turned wooden knobs or brass hardware.

Positioned against a wall in a living room or study in its closed console position, it offers surface space for a table lamp and decorative objects, while retaining its functional folding capability for entertaining.

Keep the wood conditioned with microcrystalline wax and protect the felt or baize surface from direct sunlight, moisture, and pests to prevent fading and deterioration of the textile.
