Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian burr walnut and ebonised foldover card table belongs to the Victorian period and exemplifies the gentleman's library style. The warm brown burr walnut top displays a rich grain pattern within a dark black ebonised border, complemented by an ebonised base highlighted with gilt. The double pedestal columns support the frieze above a central urn finial and four carved cabriole legs ending in original castors. Measuring 94 x 47 x 74.6 cm, the piece fits well in an empty corner of a living room or study. In a home today, the table serves as a decorative surface or foldover card table for occasional use in a sitting room or hallway. The construction combines turned pillars, carved woodwork, and visible brass castors that allow for easy movement across the room.

FAQs

Originating in the nineteenth century, a Victorian foldover card table features a hinged top that swivels and unfolds to double its surface area, traditionally used for hosting card games such as whist or bridge.

These tables were typically crafted from solid woods such as walnut or mahogany, often featuring highly figured burr veneers, ebonised timber accents, and brass hardware or castors.

Authentic pieces feature original hand-cut joinery, a swivel mechanism mounted over an internal baize or timber storage compartment, period castors, and consistent historical wear on the pedestal base.

When closed, the table functions as a compact console or occasional table against a wall or in an entryway, serving as a display surface for lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply natural beeswax polish twice yearly to protect the finish.
