Three Lignum Vitae Balls 8.5" Inches

18th century
Sold 9 June 2025 · Rupert Landen Antiques
This “Three Lignum Vitae Balls 8.5" Inches” found a buyer.

It was listed by Rupert Landen Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

18th century large scale lignum vitae spheres. These balls are a fantastic colour showing the grain, there is the odd dent and piece of patternation on them here and there. Really interesting and good looking objects. Standing on rings. I think they are too heavy to be used for some kind of bowling ball, and there aren't that many marks on them.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Lignum vitae is a notoriously dense and heavy wood derived from trees of the genus Guaiacum, historically utilised for maritime hardware, pulley sheaves, and turned sporting equipment due to its self-lubricating natural oils and exceptional durability.

These items were traditionally shaped on a lathe from a single, dense billet of heartwood, often weighted or biased for lawn games before transitioning into purely decorative display pieces over time.

Authentic pieces exhibit extreme density, sinking rapidly in water, accompanied by a dark greenish-brown to near-black colouration, tight interlocking grain patterns, and signs of age-related patina or shrinkage cracks.

These architectural objects can be displayed gathered in a large dough bowl, arranged on a bookshelf, or placed on a coffee table to introduce organic texture, historic character, and sculptural weight to a room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, occasionally treating the surface with microcrystalline wax or mineral oil to nourish the dense timber.
