Dust-pressed red clay body with ribbed back: standard Poole blank of the period.
Hand-painted underglaze colours pooled in the moulding: Arts and Crafts pottery technique.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Arts and Crafts decorative tile is an earthenware piece from the 1880 period, designed with a terracotta base and a glossy craquelure glaze. The surface displays yellow floral motifs and green foliage with visible crazing, set against a white ground, while minor nicks and chips mark the edges. It measures 1 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep in practical terms. Suitable for use in an English Country House setting, it functions well displayed on a mantelpiece as an interior architectural accent. The piece brings period character to a modern interior through its traditional palette of green and yellow tones combined with a distinct crazed finish.

FAQs

Arts and Crafts tiles are defined by stylised botanical patterns, natural imagery, and hand-applied glazes developed during the late nineteenth century in reaction to industrial mass production.

These tiles were typically manufactured using moulded terracotta or earthenware clay bases, finished with tin or lead glazes that created rich colours and intentional craquelure surface patterns.

Authentic tiles often feature maker stamps or impressions on the rear terracotta body, fine surface crazing, slight variations in glaze thickness, and standard square dimensions such as six inches by six inches.

Individual decorative tiles can be displayed on plate stands, framed as wall art, incorporated into splashbacks, or mounted inside decorative fireplace surrounds.

Clean glazed surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with warm water and neutral soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive scouring pads, or prolonged immersion in water to protect the underlying ceramic body.
