Description

An attractive mid Victorian wind-out extending dining table in quarter-sawn oak and dating to c.1870. With a rectangular top with rounded corners and a moulded edge it stands on four Arts & Crafts style ring-turned tapering legs with brass caps and brown pottery castors. This super 4ft 2in wide table smoothly extends from just under 5ft to 10ft using a Joseph Fitter ‘screw expander’ winding mechanism and strong mahogany runners allowing it to comfortably seat up to 12 people if using all three leaves.

With a good deep golden colour it has been recently polished and waxed by hand using traditional materials. Medullary rays from the quarter-sawn cut of the oak produce the attractive golden ‘tiger grain’ pattern.

Victorian dining tables typically feature substantial timber construction, often incorporating clever mechanical extension systems to accommodate large gatherings, reflecting the periods emphasis on formal entertaining.

Master craftsmen of the era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, often paired with brass castors and internal timber runners for the extension mechanisms.

Authenticity is usually verified by inspecting the hand-cut joints, timber shrinkage patterns, makers marks, and the specific mechanics of the winding mechanism and removable leaves.

Pairing a historic timber table with contemporary minimalist seating creates a balanced aesthetic that highlights the natural grain and craftsmanship without overwhelming the room.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically applying beeswax to nourish the timber and protect the surface from moisture.
