Early 19th-century frames often reflect Regency and neoclassical influences, characterised by clean architectural moulding combined with delicate applied composition ornament, such as running leaf or bead patterns.

These frames are typically constructed from a carved or moulded wooden base, covered in a layer of gesso, and finished with applied gold leaf or metal leaf over a coloured bole base.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as minor losses to the gesso, stable craquelure or oxidisation in the gilding, hand-mitred corners, and period-appropriate timber construction on the reverse.

An antique frame can create a striking focal point when paired with contemporary abstract art to create tension between old and new, or used traditionally to house period oil paintings.

Gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and water-sensitive; they should be cleaned only with a very soft, dry brush to remove dust, avoiding all liquid cleaners and direct sunlight.
