This Gothic Revival painted religious window from 1890 depicts Christ carrying his own cross to the Crucifixion within an oval medallion, set against a vibrant cobalt blue background framed by an ornate scrollwork cartouche and strapwork border with delicate green details. The religious figural composition is executed on glass panels held together by traditional lead cames, all enclosed within a simple rectangular wooden frame. Visible details include small handwritten inventory tags applied to the top right corner of the glass, clear lead joints, and slight natural grain variations across the timber surround. Measuring 47 cm high, 37 cm wide and 3 cm deep, the piece handles natural light well. It suits a domestic interior as a decorative wall hanging in a hallway, study or living room where light can pass through the painted glass.

Painted religious glass panels originated in medieval Europe as a dominant form of pictorial narrative in ecclesiastical settings. Technique evolved from simple metallic oxide line work to sophisticated enamel painting and silver stain application, reaching renewed popularity during nineteenth-century revival movements.

Traditional construction relies on mouth-blown coloured or clear glass painted with vitreous enamels composed of ground glass and metallic oxides. The glass sections are bound together using H-shaped lead strips called cames, soldered at the junctions, and sealed with waterproof putty.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including natural oxidisation on the lead cames, slight irregularities in glass thickness, and hand-applied brushwork visible under magnification. Wear or minor surface scratching on fired enamel paint also indicates historical production rather than modern screen printing.

These panels can be positioned in front of existing double-glazed windows using light hanging chains to catch natural sunlight without altering permanent joinery. Alternatively, mounting the panel inside a custom LED lightbox creates an illuminated wall display suitable for darker rooms.

Glass surfaces should be cleaned gently using distilled water and soft microfibre cloths, avoiding chemical cleaners or abrasive agents that may damage paint layers. Inspect the lead came structure periodically for flexibility or sagging, ensuring the panel remains supported in a stable wooden or metal border.
