Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Bookmatched burr walnut top: fine figured veneers favoured in the high Victorian period.

Deeply carved fruits and foliage: crisp relief work typical of 1870s Rococo revival furniture.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian occasional table uses burr walnut timber in warm brown tones with visible grain patterns and fine floral wood inlay across the shaped serpentine top. The hand-polished finish brings out the rich figuring of the wood, while the structure shows minor signs of age-related shrinkage across the surface. Two intricately carved end standards support the top, linked by a carved stretcher base decorated with motifs of leaves and fruit terminating in scrolled feet. Practical for placement at the end of a sofa or in a hallway, this piece provides a functional surface for daily use in a reception room or study. The dimensions are 73 cm high by 81 cm wide and 50 cm deep, offering a compact footprint suitable for traditional and period-inspired interiors.

FAQs

Victorian burr walnut furniture is characterised by the patterned figure of walnut burl veneers, featuring natural swirl markings cut from tree growths. During the 19th century, these pieces were crafted with carved supports, marquetry inlays, and serpentine tops.

Craftsmen constructed the primary carcass from timber like pine or oak, overlaid with thin veneers of burr walnut. Inlays were executed using contrasting hardwoods and fruitwoods, supported by solid walnut carved legs and stretchers.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-sawn construction marks, book-matched veneer work, and natural shrinkage along the timber grain. Examination of the underside reveals aged patina around joinery, brass castors, and original securing screws.

Position a Victorian occasional table as a side accent next to modern seating or within an entryway. Balance the dark wood tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary ceramic vessels, or understated artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the table positioned away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement or finish deterioration.
