This Victorian library table dates to 1860 in the Victorian style. The piece uses burr walnut, walnut, and brass materials with a warm brown colour and burr walnut veneer, crossgrain mouldings, turned column supports, Greek key carving, and splayed scroll feet. The table stands on swept carved legs with turned, fluted, and carved supports linked by a similar cross stretcher, alongside two mahogany-lined drawers and brass castors. Measuring 74 cm high, 100 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, it provides a functional surface for everyday use in a study, home office, or living room. It suits traditional interiors as a desk or writing table for reading, writing, and holding stationery or small lamps.

FAQs

A Victorian library table is a substantial writing or reading desk popular during the nineteenth century, typically featuring double-turned end supports, decorative stretchers, and high-quality timber veneers such as burr walnut.

These tables were commonly constructed from solid walnut, mahogany, or oak, frequently decorated with figured burr veneers, brass castors, and hand-carved architectural details.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass or ceramic castors, natural patination, and age-consistent wear on the underside and stretchers.

A Victorian library table works well positioned behind a sofa, repurposed as an elegant hallway console table, or styled as a dedicated home office desk in a contemporary study.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or fading, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the finish.
