Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This desk globe dates from the 1930s and exemplifies Art Deco style through its geometric forms and materials. The piece consists of a papier-mâché terrestrial globe finished with printed paper gores in muted green and ochre tones, supported by a graduated crescent-shaped brass meridian axis with engraved markings and a small spherical finial at the top. The globe rests upon a square black polished base with a stepped diagonal platform underneath. Visible details include aged patina across the map surface and metallic components. Practical for placement on a home office desk, study table or library bookcase, the piece measures 30.5 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. It functions as both a decorative object and an educational reference item.

FAQs

Globes from the 1930s reflect specific interwar geopolitical boundaries, such as the presence of Manchukuo, the USSR, and various European colonial territories. They typically featured paper gores applied over plaster or card spheres, mounted on polished brass or moulded bakelite bases.

Desk globes of this era were manufactured by applying printed paper segments, known as gores, onto a hollow plaster, papier-mache, or cardboard sphere. The central axis and meridian arm were commonly cast in brass or nickel, while bases were turned from wood or moulded in early plastics.

Dating relies heavily on cartographic evidence, such as name changes of cities and countries, alongside the publishers cartouche detail. Physical markers such as natural age oxidisation on brass, subtle yellowing of the paper varnish, and authentic construction joints also confirm age.

A vintage globe provides a focal point when placed on an executive office desk, styled within a dark wood bookshelf, or arranged alongside brass decorative objects on a mantelpiece.

Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or brush. Avoid using water, solvents, or liquid cleaners, as moisture can lift the paper gores and dissolve historical inks, and keep the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent UV fading.
