Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This larger oak farmhouse dining table dates to the early 1900s. Constructed in solid oak, the piece has a bleached natural oak finish that displays distinct wood grain and knots. The design incorporates a rectangular plank top with breadboard ends, chunky turned baluster legs standing on square block feet, and a low central H-stretcher base. The table measures 76 cm high, 237 cm wide, and 88.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the table serves as a central dining room fixture, accommodating family meals and gatherings. The traditional proportions and sturdy construction provide practical everyday utility while maintaining a rustic aesthetic.

FAQs

Refectory tables originated in the Middle Ages, initially used for communal dining in monasteries. Over the centuries, the design evolved into a standard form for domestic dining, characterised by long, narrow wooden tops supported by heavy legs and low stretchers.

Farmhouse tables were predominantly constructed from durable hardwoods such as oak, elm, or pine. Traditional joinery methods include pegged mortise and tenon joints, thick plank tops, and breadboard ends designed to accommodate timber expansion.

Authentic pieces feature signs of historical wear, such as hand-planed top surfaces, uneven wear on the foot stretchers, and original wooden peg joinery. Patination, historic shrinkage around knots, and tool marks under the tabletop also signal period construction.

A heavy oak table provides textural contrast when paired with contemporary mid-century chairs or sleek metal frames. Positioning the piece in an open-plan kitchen or dining area creates a functional focal point that bridges traditional and modern aesthetics.

Regular dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax maintain the timbers moisture barrier. Spillages should be blotted immediately to prevent staining, and hot items or liquid vessels should rest on protective coasters.
