Antique French Rosewood Marquetry Centre Table or Large Side Table

19th century
Description

A beautiful and exceptionally elegant antique French rosewood centre table dating to circa 1860, featuring a wonderfully shaped serpentine top with exquisite floral marquetry, delicate string inlay and decorative brass edging.

The richly figured rosewood top is particularly attractive, with its striking symmetrical grain beautifully complemented by an intricate central arrangement of inlaid flowers and foliage. The flowing serpentine outline and fine brass border give the table a wonderfully refined appearance, showcasing the quality and craftsmanship of French furniture from this period.

The table is designed in the Louis XV manner, with a shaped frieze incorporating a discreet single drawer, decorated with fine string inlay. It stands on four beautifully curved cabriole legs, enhanced with delicate inlaid detailing and finished with ornate brass sabots.

This antique French centre table or large side table dates to 1860 in the Louis XV style, manufactured from rosewood with brass trim and inlay in a warm brown colour. The shaped serpentine top features floral marquetry inlay, string inlay, and decorative brass edging, while the frieze includes a single drawer and stands on four curved cabriole legs with brass sabots. Visible details include a symmetrical wood grain pattern, floral and foliage motifs, and fine string detailing along the legs and frieze, with minor age-related wear present. The piece measures 74.5 cm high, 101 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. This versatile item functions as a centre table in a foyer or drawing room, or as a decorative occasional and side table in a sitting room. The detailed top and graceful proportions make the furniture piece appealing from any viewing angle, fitting naturally into refined interior spaces.

Louis XV style furniture, originating in 18th-century France, is characterised by asymmetrical Rococo curves, serpentine silhouettes, and curved cabriole legs. Centre tables from this movement often feature intricate floral marquetry, veneered hardwoods, and gilded metal mounts.

Craftsmen utilised exotic wood veneers such as rosewood, kingwood, and tulipwood laid over solid oak or fruitwood frames. Marquetry designs incorporated contrasting timber inlays, trimmed with cast brass or bronze ormolu mouldings.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut wood veneers, hand-chased brass mounts, and secondary woods such as oak on the underside. Look for natural shrinkage lines, uneven wood thickness in the veneers, and signs of age consistent with historical crafting techniques.

Place a French marquetry table as a focal point in a hallway foyer, living room corner, or beneath a mirror to create contrast against contemporary architectural lines. Pair it with neutral tones to highlight the detailed timber inlay.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or warping. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the finish.
