A Very Fine Quality Pair of French 19th-century Marble and Gilt-bronze Cassolettes

19th century
Description

An exceptionally fine and impressive pair of 19th-century French cassolettes, beautifully turned from figured dark green marble and adorned with quality cast gilt-bronze mounts.

Each Cassolette features an elegant baluster-shaped body with a beautifully veined green marble, rising to a slender, tapering neck and surmounted by an intricately cast and chased Gilded Bronze lid which is finished with a decorative spherical finial.

The bodies of the Cassolettes are particularly striking, featuring superbly cast gilt-bronze swan-neck handles. The lower sections are embellished with finely cast gilt-bronze decorative mounts, incorporating classical foliate and ornamental detailing.

Each vase is supported on an elaborate gilt-bronze stem and spreading foot, standing upon its original square marble plinth with curved corners.

The quality of the bronze casting is especially noteworthy, with crisp, finely detailed casting, excellent chasing.

The combination of the deep green marble and lavish gilt-bronze mounts is characteristic of the finest French decorative arts of the 19th century.

A particularly distinguished and decorative pair, displaying superb materials, craftsmanship and classical elegance.

This pair of 19th-century French Neoclassical cassolettes is formed from dark green veined marble and detailed with gilt bronze. Each baluster-shaped vessel rises to a tapering neck topped by a lid with a spherical finial. The design incorporates cast gilt-bronze swan-neck handles, classical acanthus leaf mounts around the lower section, and a spreading foot supported on an original square marble plinth with bevelled corners. The contrast between the deep green marble and the gilded metal creates a distinct visual pairing characteristic of French decorative arts. Measuring 44 cm high, 16 cm wide and 13 cm deep, these decorative urns suit placement on a mantelpiece, console table or sideboard within a traditional interior space.

A cassolette is a small decorative vessel, perfume burner, or incense holder popular in 18th and 19th-century European decorative arts. They often feature removable or reversible lids that reveal a candle socket or burner aperture within.

French cassolettes were typically crafted using dense veined marblesuch as Vert Maurin, Rouge Royale, or White Carraracombined with chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, handles, and bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy cast bronze mounts with hand-chased detailing, fire-gilding wear, natural age patination, and hand-cut square nuts securing the internal steel threaded rods.

Cassolettes are traditionally displayed in symmetrical pairs on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard top, serving as focal points within formal or transitional design schemes.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or water on gilt-bronze surfaces to preserve original mercury gilding, and use specialized stone cleaner for the marble.
