Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Auger-bored sockets underneath: traditional vernacular staking method.
Deep radial drying shakes across the grain: decades of natural shrinkage.
Hand-hewn faceted legs: shaped with hand tools rather than turned on a lathe.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This English 18th century antique side table comes from the rustic vernacular tradition, constructed from solid oak in a natural pale wood colour. The piece combines a thick, hand-hewn log top with three original, splayed tripod legs fitted through mortise joints. The top displays an unrefined wood grain with a slightly flattened back edge and weathered bark remnants along the outer rim, supported by chamfered legs. Standing at a height of 54 cm with a width of 41 cm and a depth of 39 cm, the proportions suit placement at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair as a bedside table.

Primitive furniture refers to practical, everyday items made by local craftspeople or farmers using native timbers and basic tools. Created during the 18th century for domestic utility, these pieces focus on functional construction and vernacular design rather than formal ornamentation.

These items were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, elm, or ash using traditional hand tools. Typical joinery included mortise-and-tenon construction, wedged leg sockets, and hand-hewn thick timber tops that preserved the natural structure of the wood.

Period items display irregularities such as hand-carved surfaces, original adze or pit-saw marks, uneven leg wear, and shrinkage cracks following the natural grain. The absence of uniform modern saw cuts and modern hardware indicates historical origin.

A primitive side table introduces organic texture and historical contrast alongside modern upholstered furniture. It works effectively positioned next to a contemporary armchair, within an empty corner, or beside a fireplace hearth to add architectural balance.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface condition. Position the table away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent structural splitting or timber movement.
