This 18th century Italian console table is an original piece constructed from solid walnut with a warm brown finish. The thick rectangular two plank top rests on shaped slab trestle legs connected by a horizontal stretcher, standing upon moulded plinth feet. Natural signs of age and general wear are visible across the timber surfaces, complemented by subtle tonal variations in the grain and the visible join lines of the plank construction. Practical dimensions of 79 cm high, 200 cm wide, and 69.5 cm deep provide a substantial surface area. Suitable for placement beside the front door, this large console table functions equally well as a hallway focal point or a functional desk in a study. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic integrates easily into traditional and transitional interiors, offering a practical workspace or a surface for lamps, books, and decorative objects.

crafted during the 18th century in Italy, these tables were designed to sit against a wall in grand halls or reception rooms. They are typically characterised by solid wood construction, often featuring shaped slab or lyre-form supports, stretchers, and refined architectural mouldings.

Italian craftsmen predominantly used native hardwoods such as walnut, chestnut, and olivewood. Furniture from this period frequently highlights the natural grain of walnut, often secured with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery and wooden peg fastenings.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail or pegged joints, and deep natural patination. Look for signs of historic woodworm, hand-forged iron hardware, and wear patterns consistent with centuries of use on the feet and stretcher base.

Position the console table in an entryway, hallway, or behind a sofa to add structural grounding. Pair the warm timber tones with contemporary artwork, a understated table lamp, or simple ceramic vessels to create an elegant contrast between old and new.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain the patina, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations.
