Antique Edwardian English Oak Serving Tray with Original Brass Handles

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome and substantial antique English oak serving tray, dating from the Edwardian period, with a beautifully patinated three-board oak base, raised gallery surround and original fixed brass carrying handles.

The tray has a lovely deep-brown colour and rich character, retaining its original finish which has not been recently polished or refinished. The natural ageing of the oak gives it a particularly attractive appearance, while the original brass handles provide a pleasing contrast against the dark wood.

With its generous proportions and practical raised sides, this is a versatile piece that would make an attractive serving tray or a decorative addition to a country house, traditional or eclectic interior. Equally appealing displayed on a coffee table, ottoman or sideboard.

The tray is in good original condition and is ready to use.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Slotted screws securing the cast brass handles: standard early twentieth-century hardware.
Narrow shrinkage gaps between the solid oak boards: natural timber movement over decades.
Darkened wax and surface wear along the rim: years of domestic handling.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian English serving tray is fashioned from solid oak with a warm brown finish and a well-patinated three-board timber base. The substantial rectangular piece incorporates a raised gallery rim with moulded detailing and retains its original polished brass loop carrying handles affixed to either end. Natural signs of age appear across the dark wood surfaces in the form of subtle grain variations and small construction fixings along the plank joins. Measuring 58 cm in width, 42.5 cm in depth, and 3.5 cm in height excluding the hardware, the tray provides generous proportions for everyday functionality. In contemporary interiors, the piece serves well as a practical accessory for carrying refreshments or as a decorative accent placed flat upon a coffee table, ottoman, or sideboard. The traditional English country house aesthetic integrates easily into both traditional and eclectic room schemes. The original construction requires no restoration work and remains entirely ready for domestic use.

Edwardian wooden trays typically feature sturdy hardwood construction, straight lines, raised outer borders to prevent items sliding, and brass side handles for functionality.

These trays were commonly constructed using native English oak or mahogany, secured with small metal fastenings and fitted with cast or stamped brass handles.

Authentic pieces display natural wear to the timber surface, aged brass hardware with historical patina, and period-appropriate joinery techniques rather than modern adhesives.

A wooden tray can be placed on a coffee table or sideboard to group decorative items, organise barware, or serve as a base for candles and books.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish periodically; avoid exposure to direct heat sources and liquid standing on the surface.
