Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Underside pine framing and corner blocks: late 19th-century cabinet construction.
White gesso ground visible beneath worn gilding: traditional water gilding over carved wood.
Shrinkage fracture across the top moulding: natural timber movement over decades.
Paint surface has fine age craquelure: undisturbed original painted finish.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of late 19th-century console tables follows the French Rococo style. Each demilune piece has a dark grey top with green faux marble painted effects, supported by a cream-painted wooden frame highlighted in gold. Ornate rocaille scroll carvings embellish the apron and the upper section of the slender cabriole legs, which terminate in carved feet. Signs of age appear in the gentle wear across the gilded surfaces and paintwork. Each table measures 76 cm high, 65.5 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door in a hallway or reception room, these items create a welcoming focal point. They offer a narrow surface for displaying decorative objects or lighting while occupying minimal floor space in a home today.

FAQs

Demilune console tables emerged during the eighteenth century as wall-mounted or two-legged accent pieces designed to complement formal interiors. Influenced by the Rococo and Louis XV movements, these tables features asymmetrical curves, natural motifs, and gilded finishes to reflect candlelight in grand reception rooms.

Traditional construction relies on carved hardwoods such as beech, pine, or oak, which are coated in layers of gesso. The decorative frame is finished with water gilding or oil gilding using thin gold leaf, often combined with painted panels and fitted with carved stone or marble tops.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, micro-cracking within the gesso surface known as craquelure, and natural wear where red or grey clay bolus shows beneath the gilded layers. The underside of the wood frame often displays hand-sawn tool marks and historic fitting hardware.

Pairing console tables symmetrically in an entryway or hallway creates immediate balance and structure. They work well flanking a doorway, positioned beneath matching wall mirrors, or placed within narrow alcoves to provide decorative surface area without encroaching on floor space.

Gilded and painted finishes require gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster. Avoid water, spray cleaners, and chemical polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying water gilding or lift delicate gesso details.
