Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Hand-spun wool and goat hair: traditional nomadic weaving before commercial machine-spun yarns.
Early synthetic dyes in tassel tufts: chemical colours introduced around the turn of the century.
Hand-twisted fringes with glass beads: original protective tribal finishes preserved intact.
Undyed plain-weave backing: complete two-sided container rather than an isolated front panel.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This antique storage bag originates from the Baluch nomads in south-west Afghanistan around 1900. The rectangular tribal textile displays a geometric chevron pattern across indigo blue and cream horizontal bands, complemented by a striped central field. Natural wool fibers form the weft-substitution front and plain-weave back, accented by braided tassel fringes, small blue glass beads, and multicolored highlights in pink, orange, and brown along the edges. The piece measures 46 x 50 cm. Ideal for display on a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study, this textile functions as a decorative wall hanging or ethnographic accent piece in a home interior.

Baluch tribal bags were crafted by nomadic pastoralists in Central Asia and South-West Afghanistan to store and transport grain, clothing, and domestic goods during migrations.

These textiles are handwoven using hand-spun wool, often incorporating flat-weave, pile weaving, or soumak techniques, coloured with natural vegetable dyes and finished with decorative fringe, glass beads, and tassels.

Authentic Baluch pieces feature soft hand-spun wool, a characteristic dark colour palette dominated by indigo blues and deep madder reds, geometric motif bands, and fine edge selvages with hand-tied tassels.

A Baluch storage bag can be mounted as framed wall art, hung directly using a textile display rod, or placed on a deep shelf or console table to add texture and historical interest.

Keep wool textiles away from direct sunlight and damp environments. Clean by gently vacuuming with a low-suction brush attachment, avoiding rotary beaters, and consult a specialist textile restorer for deep cleaning.
