Antique Turkmen Mafrash, Teke Tribes, Merv Oasis, Turkmenistan, Central Asia.

19th century
Description

The Turkmen 'mafrash’ was a small bag; smaller than a 'torba' (medium-size bag) and a 'chuval' (large storage bag), and specifically made for containing small personal items such as a mirror and jewellery.

Mafrash are few and far between these days and to find one in very good condition with original tassels, is very rare! But even more rare, dare I say, is this one, with its horizontal row of small quadrupeds - possibly deer or gazelle - along the very top border. Made by Teke tribes in the Merv Oasis circa 1860-1870, the mafrash is in excellent overall, original condition with the glowing red field containing eight small Teke 'guls' (tribal crests) and an attractive 'elem' or skirt above the tassels. To top it all, there are tiny knots of silk in just a few areas. It must have been very special to the weaver, a utilitarian item that was possibly a dowry piece and never intended for commercial sale!

Size: 81 x 30cm (2' 8" x 1' 0") excluding tassels.

This antique Turkmen mafrash is a tribal textile from the Merv Oasis in Turkmenistan, Central Asia, made by the Teke tribes around 1870. The woven wool piece has a deep red field with eight geometric Teke guls, an animal motif border showing a horizontal row of small quadrupeds along the top, and an elem or skirt above the tassels. The colour palette includes deep red, dark blue, cream, dark green, and orange tones in the extended yarn fringe that hangs from the lower edge along with tiny knots of silk in select areas. Measuring 81 x 30 cm excluding tassels, the textile is suitable for display on a narrow wall space in a home study, hallway, or living area. It brings traditional Central Asian design to modern interiors as a wall hanging.

A kap is a small woven bag face or decorative panel produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Teke, historically used for interior yurt storage and nomadic transport.

These textiles were hand-woven using hand-spun sheep wool dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, including madder root for deep red shades and indigo for dark blues.

Authentic Teke textiles feature fine asymmetrical knotting, a dense wool pile, structured repeating geometric gul motifs, and a predominant palette of deep madder reds.

Mounting the woven textile on a wall or displaying it within a floating frame adds texture, rich colour, and historical depth to contemporary entryways or living spaces.

Preserve the piece by vacuuming gently using a low-suction nozzle without a rotating brush, keeping it out of direct sunlight, and consulting a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
