This Balinese traditional sculpture dates from the early twentieth century and is rendered in a dark brown solid hardwood with a rich patina. The hand-carved piece depicts a central seated deity figure flanked by attendant figures beneath an ornate archway, topped with a prominent Barong mask crest. The entire composition features low relief carving throughout the curved back and structured front base, showing general usage wear across the timber. The dimensions measure 24 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a living room, study, or hallway, this sculpture provides an intriguing focal point on a bookshelf or mantelpiece. The compact scale allows it to sit comfortably within smaller display spaces, adding cultural character and intricate texture to an interior shelf arrangement without dominating the surrounding furniture.

Balinese wood carving historically served spiritual purposes within Hindu religious traditions, creating statues of gods, mythical figures, and temple relief panels. During the early 20th century, European artistic influence introduced stylistic evolution while retaining classical iconographic foundations.

Carvers traditionally utilise regional hardwoods such as teak, ebony, hibiscus wood, and Jackfruit wood. Dense timbers are preferred for high relief details and durability against humidity.

Authentic pieces feature crisp chisel marks, deep undercut carving, hand-buffed wax finishes, and natural age-related oxidisation in deeper crevices rather than uniform modern stains.

Place the sculpture as a textured focal point on a neutral console table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. The dark, detailed woodwork contrasts effectively against plain walls and minimalist furnishings.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush to clean recessed areas without scratching. Periodically apply high-grade beeswax paste to nourish the wood and maintain its protective surface finish.
