Victorian Taxidermy – Hawfinch by Bill Cox of Liverpool in Ebonised Picture Frame Case. Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Victorian Taxidermy – Hawfinch by Bill Cox of Liverpool in ebonised picture frame case. Circa 1900.

Stamped twice to the rear of the case ‘High class art, Naturalist, Bill Cox, 35 Manchester Street, Liverpool’ plus pencilled in hand ‘Hawfinch’ and the cases measurements. Additionally etched to the decorative gilt slip within the case is ‘Bill Cox 36 Manchester St, L-Pool’.

In all a delightful little picture frame case by the prominent Liverpool taxidermists, very well executed and complemented by a delicate water colour back drop.

Height 30cm, 24.5 Wide

The following is an extract from ‘A History of British Taxidermy’ by C. Frost published back in 1987.

‘William Thomas Cox (1875-1951) followed his father into the taxidermy business in 1850. The firm apparently did some work for Queen Victoria and Edward VII’

Both father & son traded as Bill Cox of Liverpool, and both were named William Thomas Cox. They also worked from the same premises at 35 & 36 Manchester street. The business finally closed in 1951. The premises sadly are long gone, absorbed by major road and tunnel re development.

Date of Manufacture

Kendall House Antiques Ltd. has dated this Victorian Taxidermy Hawfinch Case to the 1900s.

This Victorian taxidermy display case presents a preserved hawfinch specimen mounted by Bill Cox of Liverpool, dating from circa 1900. The piece takes the form of an ebonised wooden picture frame with a glass front, enclosing a naturalistic setting composed of botanical materials, a mossy branch groundwork, and a hand-painted watercolour backdrop depicting a blue sky and delicate dried foliage. The bird perches centrally with visible plumage in shades of brown, white, and black, alongside painted blue eye detail. The timber frame has a stepped moulding profile with a narrow decorative inner slip. Measuring 30 cm high and 24.5 cm wide, the compact construction allows for placement on a narrow wall space in a study, hallway, or living area. The construction incorporates stamps and handwritten inscriptions to the rear alongside an etched signature on the inner gilt slip, documenting its origin from the Manchester Street premises.

Popularised during the late nineteenth century, picture frame cases feature shallow wooden frames designed to hang on walls, housing taxidermy specimens against painted backgrounds with naturalistic vegetation.

These displays typically consist of ebonised softwood or hardwood frames, glass fronts, preserved botanical elements, moss, lichen, and hand-painted paper backgrounds.

Authentic examples often feature hand-painted or printed backdrops, period glass with minor distortions, paper trade labels from original taxidermists, and naturalistic dried flora typical of late Victorian craftsmanship.

Hanging a single framed mount on a wall alongside traditional artwork or positioning it in a study creates a focused decorative accent that complements dark painted walls or wooden panelling.

Keep the display away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent fading and pest infestation. Dust the exterior frame and glass carefully using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without liquid cleaners entering the casing.
