This mid-Victorian occasional table belongs to the Victorian period, dating around 1860. The piece is constructed from rosewood in a dark brown tone, displaying a rich grain across the circular top. A central barley-twist column supports the surface, leading down to a triform base fitted with bun feet. Practical dimensions measure 72 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Suitable for placement at the end of a sofa in a sitting room or within a gentleman's library, the table provides a convenient surface for everyday items. The traditional design integrates smoothly into period interiors, whilst the compact footprint ensures it fits comfortably beside seating arrangements.

Produced during the mid-to-late 19th century, these tables feature decorative central pedestal stems, such as barley twists or turned columns, supporting circular or octagonal tops. They were designed as movable accent furniture for holding tea service, books, or lamps in drawing rooms.

Mid-Victorian tables were predominantly crafted from solid or veneered hardwoods, notably Brazilian rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Pedestals were turned on lathes, while bases often featured hand-shaped triform or tripod arrangements fastened with threaded wood or iron fixings.

Authentic period examples demonstrate distinct grain figure typical of genuine rosewood, original hand-cut joinery underneath the top, and natural age-related shrinkage along the grain. The underside of the platform base typically reveals secondary woods like pine or oak, alongside period hardware.

Place the table beside modern upholstered seating or a tailored sofa to introduce historical contrast and textural depth. The compact footprint enables it to function effectively as a drink stand, lamp table, or accent piece in narrow spaces.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or timber cracking. Dust regularly with a clean microfiber cloth and apply a thin coat of high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish.
